Great read
As someone of Trinidadian origins like the author, this novel breathed new life into the many little anecdotes we were all told or "macoed" (learnt by
...
eavesdropping), of our uncles, cousins, grandfathers & elder brothers leaving home to start a new life. As with several Anglo-Caribbean storylines, The Lonely Londoners mentions the hardships these earlier immigrants faced in heart of the erstwhile empire. Yet, its strength is found in Selvon's ability to weave together - in a style that is blunt, entertaining and culturally accurate - the antics & exploits the diaspora engaged in to maintain joy & purpose amidst their collective struggle.
